Ruby Dragonfly Tiara

This ruby and diamond tiara’s life before 1999 is relatively unknown. Dated back to about 1900, it was most likely made in France, possibly by Chaumet. Composed of diamond and ruby dragonflies and flower motifs, the dragonflies are set en tremblant, giving the piece a sense of life. They can also be detached to be used as brooches, and reattached at various angles. All of these factors combine, making this piece a perfect example of the Art Nouveau movement.

In 1999 the tiara was auctioned off by Sotheby’s, and bought by the Duchess of Castro, née Camilla Crociani. Camilla is married to Prince Carlo of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Duke of Castro, and the claimant to the head of the Italian House of the Two Sicilies. As the head couple of the family, they do attend some large European royal events that require tiara’s. Camilla wore the Ruby Dragonfly tiara to the pre-wedding celebrations of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in 2004 and for the evening ball celebrating the wedding of Prince Albert II of Monaco in 2011.
